We begin from another starting point. We ask, is this safe for chemo and radiation skin, instead of, will this suit normal skin. That alters the pool we draw upon. We reject harsh cleaning agents that strip skin of moisture. We reject oily feel or overpowering scent. We seek botanicals, antioxidants and vitamins that calm, soothe, and hydrate without taxing fragile skin.

Preservatives count in this setting too. Where skin is fissured or tender after radiation, defense against bacterial growth forms part of support. What did you learn about cleansing that changed how you formulate for dryness and itch, with your Body Wash at 26.95 dollars and Face Wash both soap free and non foaming, made to be used in the shower instead of ordinary soap when soap has started to sting.

We found cleansing may add to harm. Ordinary soap and foaming washes remove oils that dry, tender skin cannot afford to lose. As chemo dries skin all over, and radiation dries one region intensely, the cleanser must cease removing and begin supporting. So our wash is soap free and non foaming by design. Apply it in the shower in place of ordinary soap, with lukewarm water and gentle hands.

We do not take formulas made for normal skin and repackage them for treatment skin. That stance begins with washing. No strong cleaning agents that remove moisture from skin. No lather for show. Only a base that renders skin clean but not taut, prepared for lotion, balm or serum. Those with widespread itch perceive change first, then find their moisturizer performs better.

How does giving sit alongside selling in hospitals and cancer centers, when you have said we have passed the point of being a company that sells something and that you are positively impacting the lives of people who have very little reason to be optimistic, and since 2005 you have donated more than 500,000 products.

We declined to follow each fad. We remained with safe, gentle formulas that calm, soothe, and hydrate. We held fragrance at tolerable levels. We held texture polished yet not greasy. We continued to ask patients what relieved and what failed, and we allowed responses to direct development. First complete skincare line designed specifically is an obligation, not a tagline.

We also decided to look and feel luxurious rather than look medical. Care takes so much already. A jar must open with ease. A lotion must spread without pull. A serum must render the face soft, not coated. Those details accumulate. They signal, you remain yourself, and your regimen can remain yours, steeped in care, harvested from what the plants do best, and grounded in what clinicians trust.

“I would steep herbs and flowers in oil and watch how they softened the skin.” What that line reveals is a founder testing on herself first, then building a method around it.

Julie Elliott once closed long fashion days in New York by preparing balms at her kitchen table. In daylight hours she supervised stores and managed 700 staff in fashion. In evening hours she soaked oils to recover after travel, learning plant signatures and essential oils privately and without formal enrollment.

She recalls crossing department store beauty floors and registering no pull toward the assortment. She hoped to lift floral formulas from health food shelves into a calmer luxury context. The concept formed in 1997. She exited fashion with roughly 10,000 dollars, added income through work for an art dealer, and opened In Fiore in 1999 with body oils and body balms.

Buyers soon reported applying body oil and body balm to their faces, seeing visible improvement, and asking when facial care would arrive. She added facial skincare in 2001, became profitable after around five years with no investors or loans, and stayed founder led. What interests us, and what hype often skips, is the preparation behind that stability. Macerations, infusions, tinctures and extracts remain made in house from scratch, at ambient temperatures, with a dedicated lab otherwise producing botanical medicine.

Thank you for joining us Julie. You opened in 1999 with roughly 10,000 dollars after leaving fashion, assisting an art dealer and not drawing from the business in the first two years. How did that spare start affect formulation and growth.

I built the business with no investors and no borrowed money. That decision shaped all else. Eighteen years of gradual growth proved fortunate because I have avoided major errors. I have found that expanding at a slower, more deliberate pace works better over time because, if trouble appears, you can contain and revise it.

Starting with almost nothing teaches direct responsibility for core tasks. We prepare all our macerations and infusions and tinctures and extracts in house, from scratch. We prepare all our macerations and infusions and tinctures and extracts in house, from scratch.

A commercial extract may offer efficiency, yet it is frequently standardized and reduced to a single marker compound. We favor a fuller soak because more of the plant remains present. Room temperature conditions, no aggressive chemicals, duration in the vessel. It proceeds slower and it occupies stock, but the finished oil carries a richness felt during massage. Essential oils, that remains my area, that is what I cherish and where I operate with ease. When we mix them into those bases, they do not rest above. They fit within.

You describe preferring to nourish and feed skin rather than strip and attack it, and Lustra supports your 4-2-4 cleansing method with a four minute massage across face, neck and decollete. Talk us through that ritual and what the oil is intended to do.

We start with Lustra as the initial cleanse because cleansing establishes conditions for all later steps. Warm a modest quantity between the palms. You entered facial skincare in 2001 after customers said they applied your body oil and body balm to their faces with improvement, as attention moved toward face. What did that repurposing teach you.

That episode trained me to heed skin ahead of trends. Shoppers returned noting the body oil left foreheads more pliable, or the body balm soothed cheeks in winter. They sought no added steps. They requested the same feeding care, adjusted for the face.

I sense that our skin holds this remarkable ability to restore itself if we permit it, and oil provides excellent protection and nourishment. So I extended the body reasoning. Support the barrier, avoid stripping. Maintain textures that prompt massage. Allow scent to join the outcome. Facial care thus followed as a logical extension, not a separate category. It expressed the same view with a lighter touch, using infusions selected for thinner facial skin and for how the face carries tension across the day.

Alli Reed on what a plant must prove to stay

Alli Reed taught herself to formulate by reading dermatology journals and Reddit threads, and she made her first moisturizer at home in the evenings while working as an advertising copywriter. A decade later Stratia makes every product in its own Los Angeles lab, excludes fragrance and essential oils, and gets the color of its bestselling lotion from two oils pressed from sea buckthorn. Here she describes the test a plant has to pass to make it into one of her formulas.

For years Alli Reed credited nothing she did for her skin, because she did nothing. As a girl she had a clear complexion by luck, and her advice to friends was to wash with body wash and a loofah. The luck ended in her early twenties. Reed had studied chemistry, and as a child had hoped to dig up dinosaurs for a living, so she handled the problem the way she handles most things and went looking for data. Dermatology journals pointed her to the skincare forums on Reddit, the forums pointed her to a blog, and the blog pointed her to a moisturizer she mixed at home once her workday as an advertising writer was over.

That product launched in May 2016 as Liquid Gold, priced at $24, in an opening run of eight bottles. Its design came from barrier research and rested on a set proportion of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. Within a year Reed had quit her job. It has since been renamed Lipid Gold, it costs $29, and it remains Stratia’s best seller. The company formulates and makes its products in its own Los Angeles building, and its mission statement is short: skincare researched to an obsessive degree, for anyone who has skin.

A botanical title might hesitate before interviewing her, and it would have reason to. Stratia’s About page asks readers to drop the clean-washing and the elaborate rituals, and Reed has no time for a formula that sells itself on ingredient romance. No product contains fragrance, alcohol or essential oils. Silicones and parabens are included deliberately, and the glossary on the brand’s site gives the reason for each.

For a magazine that reads formulas closely, the interesting part is that plants appear on those ingredient lists all the same. Two sea buckthorn oils give Lipid Gold its yellow tint, and the formula also contains rosehip and cranberry seed oils. Interface, the brand’s peptide cream, contains licorice root. No plant on the list is decorative. Each has a task, and that is the test we apply to a formula too: ask what the ingredient does in skin, then ask what shows it.

You told Refinery29 in 2018 that you once recommended washing with body wash and a loofah in the shower. What shifted when your own skin stopped behaving in your early twenties?

Much of this is penance for who I used to be. My skin was fine as a kid, and that came down to genetics rather than any routine. My advice to people who asked was worthless. Then, in my early twenties, years of doing nothing came due.

Whenever something catches my attention, I approach it as a scientist would. I’ve been a science nerd all my life. At school I wanted to be a paleontologist, then an astronomer, and I ended up studying chemistry at college. So I read widely: what was causing the problems on my skin, and which topical ingredients and formulas could change them. The literature on what helps skin and what does not is strong. What I lacked, standing in a shop, was any information about a product beyond what its marketing team let through. Stratia grew out of that gap.

Before Stratia, you were active on Reddit’s skincare forums and published formulas on your blog, The Acid Queen, and you posted your leftover batches to readers. What did that community teach you?

Reddit has communities that go very deep on research if that’s what you want. I was an active participant long before I considered making skincare of my own, let alone selling it. There I met a small group who made products at home with real scientific rigor. Their posts were less about mashing an avocado and more about where to buy propylene glycol in small quantities.

It was a hobby, and it filled a hole, because I missed working in a lab. Other people find satisfaction in cooking an elaborate dinner. For me it was researching a formula, making it, putting it on my skin and watching it work. I mailed leftover product to readers, and they kept asking for more.

The community also showed me what people care about and how they want to be addressed. When I started selling, the products were meant to answer a need people had already voiced.

Lipid Gold began in May 2016 as a formula “based on studies I’d read about a specific ratio of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids.” You made eight bottles at first. Why anchor a debut product to a ratio instead of a single star ingredient?

The ratio is what matters. Your moisture barrier is built like a brick wall. Flat skin cells are the bricks, and the mortar between them is a fatty blend of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. If the mortar is weakened, you can have skin that is dry and oily together, very reactive, or prone to breakouts. The studies showed these three lipids acting together in proportion, which makes them a good model for copying and supporting the natural barrier.

I also couldn’t find anything like it. Cosmetic chemists want the most elegant, longest-lasting and nicest-smelling product, while biologists and dermatologists study what skin really needs, and the two groups don’t line up. I set out to make what I wanted to buy and couldn’t.

I treated it as a weekend hobby. My expectation was a few orders to pack and post on a Saturday. Hence eight bottles.

Two oils from one plant, sea buckthorn seed oil and sea buckthorn fruit oil, make Lipid Gold yellow, and the product page cautions that very fair skin can show a brief orange tint. Why keep an ingredient that needs a warning label?

It has earned the spot. Each ingredient in a product has a function, and sea buckthorn does heavy lifting for just two lines on the label. The fruit oil is a bright red and the seed oil a vivid orange, and both contain antioxidants, phytosterols and uncommon fatty acids. The formula exists to replenish the barrier’s lipids, so they fit. The same goes for rosehip oil, rich in linoleic and linolenic acid, and for cranberry seed oil, which carries a balanced blend of omega 3, 6 and 9.

The color is entirely natural, with no dye added to make it golden. It doesn’t stain, and on most skin it disappears as you apply it. People with very fair skin may see a faint orange cast for a while, and they might prefer to use it at bedtime only.

I would rather tell people that in advance than have them find out on the commute.

The About page on your site asks readers to drop “the clean-washing and overly complicated rituals.” Stratia leaves out fragrance, alcohol and essential oils, but uses silicones freely and parabens as preservatives. What would you say to a reader who thinks plant-derived means gentle?

My line follows function, not origin. The vogue for “free from” labels has pushed brands to make products free from huge lists of ingredients that are safe and work well. Attention goes to what a product lacks rather than what it is, and the result is pleasantly scented water.

So I exclude the common irritants that give skin nothing. Fragrance is one. Essential oils are another, and that says nothing against plants. It’s a judgment on scent, which does nothing for the barrier and ranks among the likeliest causes of a reactive face flaring up. Silicones, on the other hand, are entirely safe and highly effective, so we use them freely. Our parabens are safe, gentle and effective preservatives, and any product containing water needs one.

Following the trends could have earned Stratia a good deal more money. I only want to sell things that do their job. A good product is effective, pleasant to use and safe by design. Natural doesn’t appear in that list, and synthetic doesn’t either.

The Quality Edit heard you describe a peptide in 2023 as “a little Lego tower,” moved around in Interface by “microscopic taxi cabs.” That gel-cream also contains licorice root extract, rosehip seed oil and two emulsifiers derived from olives. What role do plants play in a peptide formula?

I find peptides fascinating. Each is a short string of amino acids, a bit like a little Lego tower, and the number of possible combinations is close to endless. Interface contains seven. A few were picked for the look of firmness and bounce, and others target important proteins in the skin barrier. The active peptides are held in a biocompatible shell lined with carrier peptides. These behave like microscopic taxi cabs and deliver the actives to the receptors they need, so they aren’t wasted elsewhere in the skin.

The plants play a supporting role, and I intend that kindly. Licorice root extract is included for brighter, calmer-looking skin. Rosehip seed oil provides linoleic and linolenic acid. Squalane, which comes from plants, hydrates without feeling heavy, and the emulsifiers from olives keep the oil and water phases together.

I tested endlessly and took apart a few moisturizers I love, until the gel-cream was deeply moisturizing and not at all greasy. Feel is part of quality for me, since a cream only works if you look forward to putting it on twice a day.

Stratia started in your kitchen, and by 2018 your first run of eight bottles had grown into 1,300 made in one day. You still formulate and produce everything in your own building at 2600 South Santa Fe Avenue in Los Angeles. What do you gain by keeping manufacturing in-house?

I began in my kitchen with a small chemistry setup, and as we expanded I kept enlarging the lab. In the early days I formulated, made and shipped everything from my apartment, so overhead was close to zero. No investors or mentors were around to tell me the next step, so I guessed as well as I could at how to make enough product without cutting corners on quality or safety.

Making everything ourselves is something I’m very thankful for. We control sourcing, operating procedures and quality assurance end to end. It also keeps us agile: when a product sells out without warning, we can restock it within days. In 2018 you said that announcing a vitamin C serum to fans a year and a half before it was ready taught you to stay quiet about products in development. The C+C Serum now combines 15% vitamin C with CoQ10, and Stratia releases one or two products a year. What does a formula have to get through first?

That serum was a lesson in humility. I announced it before I understood how many formulation problems it would raise, and a great deal can go wrong between an idea and a finished product. These days I say nothing until launch is nearly here.

The start is the enjoyable stage. I take several research journals and keep an eye out for new studies or ingredients that might become a product. I like to sketch a candidate formula in Excel and then try it at my small formulation station, which is where I’m happiest. Prototypes follow, many of them, and then our volunteer testers, of whom we have had about a thousand.

We go slowly on purpose. My aim is to make things I don’t believe have a match on the market. Where excellent, affordable versions already exist, I doubt I could add anything distinctive. A product only goes out if I think it’s good.

You started Stratia on “very meager savings,” were profitable by the second month and reached $2 million in sales in 2019. In November 2021 you accepted investment from Fable, the investment arm of Natura &Co. Why bring in a partner you did not need?

Fundraising was never necessary, because we had been profitable since the second month. For years we turned things down, including big retailers who wanted to carry us, since I needed to know that nobody else was deciding what we formulated or released next.

Later I wanted a partner who could bring best practices, so I wasn’t guessing. Everything I’d built came from trial and error, and a growing team deserves better than my best guesses.

Marketing follows the same pattern. Growth came through word of mouth, from people on Reddit and Instagram sharing the products. We will certainly not stake everything on Facebook ads. When brands ask how to market on Reddit, I tell them not to try it, because Reddit dislikes being marketed to. What succeeds is radical authenticity. It sounds like a marketing gimmick, but I mean it sincerely: trust completely in how good the product is and be very open with customers.

I trained in esthetics without initially planning to practice as an esthetician, yet I wanted proximity to that plant based world from childhood. My family kept herbs at home. I wanted to rebuild around plants and oils capable of cleansing without removal of surface lipids.

The initial formula arose on a day when I specifically needed to remove sunblock from my face. I required full yet gentle removal. I therefore prepared a large molecule cleansing oil. That preparation became Rose Cleansing Oil. I next prepared Gold for pigmentation and scarring, since those marks remained.

In 2011 I opened a skincare studio in San Francisco to offer oil cleansing and water free moisturizing to patients. Across five to six years I revised hundreds of versions within a spa context. That period was sobering. I possessed high quality skincare and professional training in its application. I followed protocol as taught. My skin still progressed to stage three, borderline stage four acne. The pain altered my reading of formulas.

I began to place labels from separate brands side by side. To me they appeared nearly identical. I repeatedly observed surfactants and preservatives also present in household products. I started to question whether the foundation of the routine created the issue, rather than the active. Repeated stripping and preserving followed by further stripping seemed unlikely to produce settled skin.

In about six weeks, my face moved from stage three, borderline stage four acne, to no active acne. My intervention was cessation. I discontinued all products and water on my face. That pause created room for reflection. It oriented me toward cooperating with skin and its own healing system, rather than opposing it.

I love creating beautiful things. And I get to do that work alongside the best people. For me that beauty involves texture. The oil ought to flow slowly. It ought to carry roses, not perfume. The cloth ought to be warm. The sequence ought to require a minute, morning and night, and produce calm.

Gold began with pigmentation and scarring after acne and centers on a singular ingredient approach. Which plant anchored Gold, and what did it demand from the remaining formula.

I tend to fall in love with one single ingredient and then build a product around that ingredient. In the case of Gold, that attachment concerned the appearance of repair. The cost is higher, financially and operationally. Natural skincare costs far more to create than synthetic, and that is why so much synthetic lab skincare exists. Quality plant oils carry higher prices. They differ across harvests. They require careful storage. They prevent reliance on texture builders.

The preservation is simplicity. Oils rank among the most potent, healing, and exquisite kinds of natural ingredients. Without fillers of any kind, the bottle contents correspond directly to what contacts skin. Without chemical emulsifiers or surfactants, skin avoids daily contact with a foaming system.

I also refuse tea tree oil because I consider it too harsh for the faces I treat. My clients frequently present as acne prone while also dry or sensitive. They require consistent cleansing and consistent nourishment. Everything is produced by hand inside our San Francisco lab. We produce small batches to allow assessment of aroma and feel in each blend. We heat oils gently where appropriate, we infuse, we allow resting, then we evaluate scent, color and slip on skin. When the result is incorrect, we revise or withhold it from bottling.

We retain notes from the treatment room. That space serves as our testing ground. A formula may pass through many iterations before it receives a name. Skin. Care. That phrasing reflects my model, with a pause. Wash with oil. Press in oil. Allow skin to rest.

Readiness rests on client feedback over time. Is makeup removed fully. Does skin appear calm by morning. Does aroma persist without becoming sharp. We introduced winners because clients continued to request them. That criterion still applies.

Backstage moves quickly, yet skin still responds to unhurried preparation. I prepare skin with the same sequence used in the studio. Oil cleanse to remove existing layers. In November 2016 two founders chose to build suncare for women who train outdoors and skip sunscreen because texture fails. That decision set the formula brief for Fré.

We met in 2014 and we both sought work with strong meaning beyond Israel. I was born in Morocco in 1978 where I lived until age 18, then I studied in Paris, and in New York, before immigrating to Israel in 2001 where I joined philanthropic organizations to help give equal opportunities to children, youth and immigrants. I was born in Paris in 1978 where I lived until the age of 22. In 2000, new to Tel Aviv, my first role was investment banker, raising funds for start ups in the high tech sector. When we met, we agreed founding a profitable business with an impactful social purpose was the objective. We examined women who train outside, who sweat daily, who live in sun. They described breakouts, redness, dehydration, clogged pores. The sunscreens available to them were sticky or heavy, so they skipped them. That seemed wrong to us. We grew up around the Mediterranean, we like sun, and we wanted protection to feel pleasant. So we wrote a short brief. Clean, effective and joyful suncare, with no compromise. No sticky sunscreens. No toxic ingredients. A routine that could shield in the morning, support recovery at night, and keep skin calm through sweat.

Your community is described as women athletes and coaches, and your motto is when women are strong, the world is strong. As two men, you have said you do not believe women should only be supported by women. How does that support operate day to day.

I support female leadership, I view women as a driving force for progress and I hold that free and strong women move humanity forward and we need them at their best, always. When women have strength, the world has strength. For us, that line is not a slogan. My mother is a strong woman who broke strict patriarchal rules to become an ophthalmologist, my father is a gynecologist who helped women give birth. That remained with me. We do not hold that women should only be supported by women. If we want to change the world by strengthening the place of women in it, I hold that the support of men is essential. In practice that means listening first. Our community reports what fails during training, what burns the eyes, what leaves a cast, what pills under sweat. At Fré, my role is with our amazing community to build an impactful movement for empowerment and environmental protection. If we can connect all our strengths, I hold that we will be amazed by what we will achieve as a community. And it means giving back steadily, including our pledge of one percent of revenue to protect people and planet.

ROSEN Skincare started in a UCLA residence hall as an answer for skin that conventional blemish aisles overlooked. Founder Jamika Martin now works from Austin on formulas for breakouts in melanated skin, combining studied actives with plant extracts to address both active lesions and the persistent marks that remain. She discusses formulation choices, retail scale and why a smaller and more legible routine proves easier to maintain.

Jamika Martin never intended to lead a skin care label. She intended to settle her own complexion. After prolonged inflammatory breakouts that persisted through two courses of Accutane, she surveyed the Target blemish section and recognized only the aggressive cleansers she had used for ten years. None addressed her experience as a young Black woman managing ongoing lesions plus durable post inflammatory color.

So she began blending in her UCLA room, a native of Paso Robles testing through repetition what her complexion would tolerate. Rose is her middle name, which supplied the foundation for the label, although Rose alone suggested color cosmetics and Rosen remained. That modest edit captures much about the company that came next, gentle in tone and practical in purpose.

You finished a second course of Accutane nine months earlier and have described feeling afraid to start it at first and exhausted by your skin. What did those residence hall experiments involve, and which response convinced you the work extended beyond your own bathroom shelf?

Thanks for inviting me. I finished my second course of Accutane nine months prior. I felt afraid to try it initially, yet I reached such an exhausted point with my skin. Nothing from the drugstore kept me stable and the prescription path had drained me. In my residence hall I kept it basic, studying ingredient panels and testing milder bases with components I could identify. I was in my sophomore year at UCLA and then through my junior year, noting which formulas stung and which allowed my face to rest. Classmates began asking what I applied because my complexion appeared more settled. Then friends of those friends wrote. That response first indicated the project exceeded my own need. I never mapped a business. I mapped a way to cross campus without dense coverage. Your middle name is Rose and you have explained that Rose alone sounded like color cosmetics, which led to Rosen. Why was that separation important, and what does the revised name communicate about the line?

My middle name is Rose, and that provides the rose element, but I thought the single word sounded like makeup. I never wanted a listener to picture lip color or pressed powder upon hearing us. I wanted the word to signal skin care. Adding the N gave it the weight of a family name, like a compact house with a clear stance. Rosen preserves the softness of rose, which holds personal meaning for me, while clarifying that our work concerns skin. It also prevents us from sitting only in a soft botanical corner. A rose label might imply something purely floral or purely sugary. We are not that. We place blemish care first. The name carries both aspects, the plant origin and the functional job. Shoppers recall it, they pronounce it comfortably in aisles, and it accommodates movement from cleansers toward discoloration care without feeling mismatched.

You revisited the Target blemish section and called it deeply frustrating because the assortment matched what you used a decade before. Which qualities failed you there, and how did that visit create your standard of pairing studied performance with plant derived parts?

I dealt with those lesions and returning to that Target section for blemish care felt deeply frustrating. It stocked the identical options I purchased ten years prior. Each formula seemed abrasive and dehydrating, designed for rapid desiccation rather than for complexions that also develop spots and uneven color. There are many labels for blemishes and many labels that call themselves natural, but there is very few that do both. That sentence still directs us.
